Frequently Asked Questions
Where do fatal crashes tend to happen most?
A large share occur on rural highways and two-lane roads, where higher speeds and head-on or cross-traffic collisions are more common than on interstates.
What raises the odds that a crash turns deadly?
Higher travel speeds, lack of seat belt use, driving under the influence, and the size or weight mismatch between vehicles (such as a pickup truck versus a passenger car) all play a role.
Why does speed matter so much for survival?
Faster impact speeds mean more force is transferred to occupants during a collision, which increases the likelihood of serious or fatal injury even in vehicles with modern safety features.
Does wearing a seat belt really make a difference?
Yes. Seat belts keep occupants from being thrown from their seats or ejected during a crash, and they significantly improve the odds of survival in a serious collision.
