Frequently Asked Questions
Where do fatal crashes tend to happen most? Intersections outside city centers, including rural and township roads with higher speed limits, see a large share of fatal crashes because vehicles are usually moving faster when they collide.
What raises the chances that a crash will be fatal? Higher speeds, failure to yield at intersections, and the size or weight difference between vehicles involved can all increase the severity of a crash.
How much does speed affect whether someone survives a crash? Even modest speed increases raise the force of impact substantially, which is why crashes at intersections with higher posted limits tend to produce more serious injuries.
Why do officials stress seat belt use after crashes like this? Seat belts keep occupants from being thrown within or out of the vehicle during a collision, which lowers the risk of fatal injury significantly in most crash types.
