Frequently Asked Questions

What should a pedestrian do after being hit by a vehicle?

Seek medical attention right away, even if injuries seem minor at first, and try to get the names of any witnesses and responding officers. A formal report filed by police will usually document the scene and both accounts.

Who has the right of way at an intersection or crosswalk?

Right-of-way rules vary by state and by whether a signal or marked crosswalk is present, but drivers are generally required to yield to pedestrians who have already entered a crosswalk legally. Pedestrians are still expected to use care before stepping into traffic, including at signaled intersections.

How can drivers lower the chance of a collision with someone on foot?

Staying alert near intersections, scanning for people entering the roadway before moving through a green light, and slowing down in low-light hours such as early morning can help. Visibility is usually reduced at dawn and dusk, which can make pedestrians harder to spot.

What injuries are common in pedestrian crashes involving large trucks?

Because of the size difference between trucks and pedestrians, injuries can range from fractures and head trauma to more severe, life-threatening harm. Outcomes depend heavily on vehicle speed and the point of impact.
