Chicago, IL (May 28, 2026) – At least 20 people were hurt Wednesday evening, May 27, after two CTA buses and a red sedan were involved in a collision on Chicago’s West Side.
The accident happened around 6:42 p.m. near Lake Street and Homan Avenue in East Garfield Park. Preliminary information said a driver hit a southbound Route 82 bus, which then led to contact with a northbound bus.
Fire personnel reported that 11 people were taken to hospitals. One person was listed in critical condition, five were in serious condition, and five others were in good condition. Nine more people were treated at the site.
Chicago police later said nine people were hospitalized, including the sedan driver, one CTA bus driver, and seven passengers. Witnesses told investigators that the red car went through a red light before the wreck.
The cause remains under review as investigators continue gathering details. We hope everyone wounded receives steady care and support during recovery.
Why Bus Accidents Can Injure Many People
Bus accidents can lead to many injuries because several passengers may be standing, seated, or moving through the aisle when contact occurs. A sudden stop or side impact can throw riders into seats, poles, doors, windows, or other passengers. Even people who do not appear badly hurt at first may later feel knee, back, neck, or shoulder pain.
Crashes involving two buses and another vehicle can be complex because there may be more than one point of contact. Investigators may review traffic signals, lane direction, vehicle speed, bus movement, camera footage, and witness statements. Medical teams may sort patients by injury severity so those with the most serious trauma receive care first. Road closures may also be needed while damaged vehicles are removed and traffic is safely restored.
