Newtown, CT (May 28, 2026) – A bus crash with reported injuries slowed traffic Wednesday on Interstate 84 East near the Exit 9 ramps in Newtown.
Early reports stated that at least one Greyhound bus, and possibly a second bus, was involved along the eastbound side of the highway. Emergency units arrived at the roadway and began assisting the people involved while traffic moved cautiously through the area.
By later in the day, crews had mostly cleared the roadway while ambulance personnel continued checking passengers for possible harm.
Traffic delays continued near Exit 9 as drivers worked through backed-up lanes around the highway.
The cause of the wreck remains under review as more information is gathered. We hope those affected by this roadway emergency recover quickly.
Why Bus Crashes on Highways Often Cause Major Traffic Delays
Bus crashes on interstate highways can lead to long backups because of the size of the vehicles involved and the number of passengers who may need assistance. Even when injuries appear minor, medical evaluations often take time as crews check each person carefully before the roadway can fully reopen.
Large passenger buses can also block multiple lanes, making it harder for traffic to move around the affected portion of the highway. Investigators may review roadway footage, vehicle positioning, driver statements, and traffic patterns to piece together what happened. In some cases, buses must be inspected before they can be moved safely from travel lanes.
Heavy travel periods can make delays even worse, especially near busy exits or merging ramps where traffic volume is already high.
