What Factors Can Contribute to Multi-Vehicle Crashes on Interstate Highways?
Multi-vehicle crashes on major interstates occur during overnight or early morning hours when visibility is lower, and traffic speeds remain high. On busy highways like I-95, vehicles travel close together, leaving little room to react if one driver suddenly slows or loses control.
When several vehicles are involved, the chain reaction can grow quickly. Large vehicles such as buses and delivery trucks require longer stopping distances, which can add to the impact of sudden traffic slowdowns. Road conditions, driver fatigue, and limited lighting may also increase the risk.
Because interstate highways carry both passenger vehicles and commercial traffic, even a single mistake can affect many people within seconds.
