Why Intersection Crashes Can Be Particularly Dangerous
Intersections are common sites for crashes because vehicles cross paths, often at right angles, increasing the potential for serious collisions. Failure to stop, distracted driving, and misjudging gaps in traffic can all lead to vehicles leaving the roadway or striking roadside objects.
Even when seat belts are used, collisions with embankments, ditches, or other obstacles can produce serious or fatal injuries due to the sudden change in speed and direction. Vehicle size, speed, and impact angle also influence the severity of injuries in these types of accidents.
Prompt medical response and roadway safety features, such as clear signage and proper lane markings, can help reduce the risk of injury but cannot eliminate danger entirely.
