Chisago City, MN (June 3, 2026) – A bicyclist was seriously hurt Tuesday evening, June 2, after a truck struck him at the intersection of Highway 8 and Lofton Ave. The collision occurred around 7:50 p.m. on westbound Highway 8.
Ian Kalani Eichten, 36, of Shafer, was riding southbound on Lofton Ave without helmet when he entered the intersection and was hit by a westbound 2026 Ford F350. He was taken to Regions Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The F350, driven by Hendry Patricio Guaman Morocho, 27, of Minneapolis, was towing a 2024 Big Tex Dump Trailer at the time. A passenger in the truck, Darwin Rene Chavez Guaman, 29, also of Minneapolis, was uninjured. Alcohol was suspected in connection with the driver.
Road conditions were dry. Emergency units responded to the scene. This wreck remains under active review, and additional details are expected to be released as the inquiry proceeds. We hope for Ian’s recovery and hold his family in our thoughts during this difficult time.
What Drivers and Cyclists Should Know About Intersection Safety on Minnesota Highways
Crashes between motor vehicles and bicyclists at highway intersections tend to produce serious outcomes, particularly when speed is involved. On state highways, vehicles often travel at higher speeds than on local roads, which leaves little time for either a driver or a cyclist to react when paths converge unexpectedly. Intersections where side streets meet primary highways are especially high-risk because not all of them have signals or dedicated crossing phases for non-motorized traffic.
Helmet use is one of the most well-documented protective factors for bicyclists involved in collisions. Research consistently shows that riders without helmets face significantly greater risk of head trauma when struck by a vehicle. Minnesota does not require helmet use for adult cyclists, but safety advocates broadly recommend it regardless of age or trip distance.
Alcohol involvement adds another layer of complexity to these crashes. Impaired drivers may have slower reaction times and reduced awareness of cyclists entering an intersection, making an already dangerous crossing even harder to navigate safely.
