What Makes Bicycle Hit-and-Run Crashes Difficult to Investigate?

A bicycle hit-and-run can leave investigators with physical evidence but no driver at the scene. Damage to the bicycle, vehicle parts left on the roadway, tire marks, and debris may help establish how the collision occurred. Nearby surveillance cameras and witness accounts can also provide information about the vehicle’s direction and appearance.

Roadway lighting, traffic conditions, and visibility may also be examined in a nighttime or daytime bicycle crash. The point of impact and the final location of the bicycle can help establish the sequence of events. Identifying the vehicle can become more difficult when a driver leaves before witnesses or emergency crews can record details.
