Why Hit-and-Run Crashes Involving Cyclists Can Be Difficult to Investigate
Hit-and-run crashes involving cyclists often present unique challenges because investigators may have limited information about the vehicle involved. When no driver remains at the scene, physical evidence and witness accounts can become especially important.
Bicyclists are particularly vulnerable in traffic because they lack the protective structures found in passenger vehicles. As a result, collisions involving bicycles can lead to severe or fatal injuries, even when only one vehicle is involved.
Investigators commonly examine roadway evidence, bicycle damage, surveillance footage, and any available witness statements to help identify what occurred. In some cases, the timing of the crash may also need to be determined if the cyclist is discovered hours after the collision.
