New Caney, TX (June 5, 2026) – An adult male cyclist was killed in a suspected hit-and-run crash along Loop 494 in New Caney, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Troopers responded at approximately 10:20 a.m. Thursday, June 4, on the northbound side of Loop 494 near the Grand Parkway. Upon arrival, they found a deceased man and his bicycle in a ditch alongside the roadway.

Preliminary findings indicate the cyclist left a nearby residence around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3. Investigators believe he was struck from behind later that night by an unknown vehicle traveling northbound on Loop 494. The vehicle reportedly left the area following the collision.

The identity of the deceased man has not been released. Investigators have not provided a description of the vehicle believed to be involved.

Troopers continue to work to determine exactly what happened and are seeking additional information related to the fatal crash. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the victim’s family and loved ones.

Why Hit-and-Run Crashes Involving Cyclists Can Be Difficult to Investigate

Hit-and-run crashes involving cyclists often present unique challenges because investigators may have limited information about the vehicle involved. When no driver remains at the scene, physical evidence and witness accounts can become especially important.

Bicyclists are particularly vulnerable in traffic because they lack the protective structures found in passenger vehicles. As a result, collisions involving bicycles can lead to severe or fatal injuries, even when only one vehicle is involved.

Investigators commonly examine roadway evidence, bicycle damage, surveillance footage, and any available witness statements to help identify what occurred. In some cases, the timing of the crash may also need to be determined if the cyclist is discovered hours after the collision.
