Why Bicycle Crashes at Intersections Can Lead to Serious Injuries
Intersections can be especially dangerous for cyclists because drivers and riders must react quickly to changing traffic patterns, turns, and sudden stops. Even low-speed impacts can cause serious harm when a cyclist is thrown from a bike or strikes another vehicle.
Protective equipment, such as helmets, may help reduce the severity of head injuries during bicycle crashes. Investigators reviewing these collisions examine braking distance, roadway visibility, and the positions of both the bicycle and vehicle to understand how the impact occurred. Urban intersections with multiple lanes and turning traffic may also increase the risk of these types of crashes.
