DALLAS, Dallas County, Texas, Oct. 6, 2026 — One person died and another was left in critical condition Monday afternoon, October 5, after a multi-vehicle crash shut down southbound Central Expressway in Dallas.

The crash happened around 12:20 p.m. in the southbound lanes of Central Expressway just before the interchange with LBJ Freeway (I-635), according to Dallas Fire Rescue and police. Officials said the wreck involved a passenger vehicle and an 18-wheeler.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. A second person was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Neither victim's identity had been released as of this writing.

Southbound lanes of Central Expressway remained closed as of 4 p.m. Monday while crews worked the scene, according to the report. The cause of the crash had not been determined and remains under investigation.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.

How Investigators Piece Together a Fatal Highway Crash

A crash that closes a freeway for hours is not just a cleanup job. Officers first secure the scene and attend to the injured, then document skid marks, debris fields, vehicle positions and damage before anything is moved. With a commercial truck involved, investigators often also pull data from the truck's electronic control module, which can record speed and braking in the seconds before impact.

Names are typically withheld until the medical examiner confirms identity and next of kin are notified, a process that can take hours or days depending on the condition of the victim and how quickly family can be reached. That delay is procedural, not a sign anything is being withheld from the public.

A full crash report, including any toxicology results, usually takes weeks to complete. Lab testing for alcohol or drugs is not instant, and reconstruction specialists often need time to model how the vehicles interacted before issuing a final determination of cause.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does speed affect the chances of surviving a crash?

Higher speed increases both the force of impact and the distance needed to stop. Even a modest increase in speed can turn a survivable crash into a fatal one, especially in multi-vehicle collisions on highways.

Why does seat belt use matter so much in highway crashes?

Seat belts keep occupants from being thrown from their seats or ejected during a collision. In crashes involving large trucks, where the force imbalance between vehicles is severe, belt use is often the difference between serious injury and death.

What should families do after a fatal crash like this?

Contact the investigating agency for updates, request the official crash report once it's released, and keep records of any communications. A victim advocate or the medical examiner's office can often help with next steps regarding identification and release of a loved one.

How are fatal highway crashes investigated?

Specially trained crash reconstruction officers examine the scene, vehicle data and witness accounts to determine how the collision occurred. Findings are compiled into a final report that can take several weeks to complete.
