Danvers, MA (March 4, 2026) – A multi-vehicle crash was reported on Wednesday morning, March 4, on the ramp from Interstate 95 North to Route 1 North in Danvers after icy conditions developed overnight. The pileup occurred during the early morning commute.
Troopers responded to reports of several vehicles involved in the crash on the highway ramp. Officials said the roadway was covered with ice following overnight freezing rain. Initial reports indicated that at least 10 vehicles were involved in the collision.
Responders arriving at the scene reported that the ramp surface was extremely slick. The ice-covered roadway contributed to several vehicles losing control and striking one another along the ramp.
Information about injuries has not been fully released at this time. Crews worked to clear the damaged vehicles and treat the icy surface to restore safe travel conditions.
The ramp was reopened to traffic around 7:45 a.m. after the area was cleared and treated.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

How Freezing Rain Creates Dangerous Driving Conditions
Freezing rain can create extremely hazardous road conditions because it forms a thin layer of ice on pavement. This ice, sometimes called black ice, can be difficult for drivers to see, especially during early morning hours before sunlight warms the roadway.
Highway ramps and bridges are often among the first places where ice forms. These surfaces cool faster than regular roadways because cold air can circulate above and below them. When vehicles travel over ice-covered pavement, tires may lose traction quickly, leading to skidding or loss of control.
When several vehicles encounter the same icy stretch of road, chain-reaction crashes can occur. Reduced traction makes it harder for drivers to brake or steer, increasing the likelihood of multiple vehicles colliding in a short distance.
