Peoria, IL (September 7, 2026) – A 70-year-old woman died after flames broke out early Sunday morning, September 6, inside a high-rise apartment building west of Downtown Peoria. The Peoria County Coroner’s Office identified the woman as Lynn Hinckley.
Emergency units arrived at B’nai B’rith Apartments on W. Sam J. Stone Ave. shortly after 6 a.m. and found flames coming from a unit on the 11th floor. Hinckley was found inside and removed from the room where the fire occurred.
Emergency units searched the 10th and 11th floors for residents who needed help and assisted with the evacuation. Multiple people were taken to the hospital, but their medical conditions were unknown at the time.
Hinckley arrived at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center unresponsive, without breathing or a pulse. She was pronounced dead shortly before 7 a.m., while an autopsy was scheduled to determine the official cause of death.
The cause of the fire remains under review as more information is gathered.
