POMPANO BEACH, Broward County, Fla., Oct. 25, 2026 — A woman is facing multiple charges after she reportedly caused a string of crashes in a stolen car Friday afternoon, October 23, and tried to carjack a bystander who stopped to help. No one was killed, though several people suffered injuries described as minor to non-life-threatening.
The Broward Sheriff's Office said deputies were called around 2:47 p.m. to a hit-and-run crash near Northeast 54th Street and Federal Highway. Investigators said the driver, identified as 44-year-old Roszetta Benjamin, was behind the wheel of a stolen vehicle when it collided with three other cars. The occupants of those vehicles sustained minor injuries.
Benjamin then kept driving and was involved in a second crash at North Federal Highway and Hillsboro Boulevard, according to the sheriff's office. That crash left another driver with injuries described as non-life-threatening and disabled the stolen car, deputies said.
A man who stopped to help at the scene was then targeted in an attempted carjacking, authorities said. A struggle over the vehicle followed, and Benjamin allegedly got the car into drive, drove off, and crashed into the convenience store of a nearby gas station. An employee at the station told reporters he heard the crash and ran outside, and said the woman appeared to be acting erratically before the vehicle struck another car and continued toward the store.
Benjamin was arrested and charged with carjacking, kidnapping, grand theft, and hit-and-run. A judge set her bond at more than $104,000 during a court appearance, and the sheriff's office said the investigation remains active.
We hope those who were hurt recover fully and quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions
What typically causes crashes like this one?
Multi-vehicle crash sequences like this are often tied to a single driver losing control or fleeing a scene, which can trigger a chain of secondary collisions as other vehicles react.
Does speed make a difference in how bad a crash is?
Yes. Higher speeds give drivers less time to react and increase the force involved in a collision, which raises the likelihood of serious injury even in short-distance crashes.
Why is erratic or distracted driving so dangerous in situations like this?
A driver who is distracted, panicked, or otherwise not in control of a vehicle can miss traffic signals, other cars, and pedestrians, increasing the chances of repeated collisions in a short period of time.
What to Do After a Car Accident in Pompano Beach, FL
If you're involved in or witness a crash, start by checking yourself and others for injuries and calling 911 right away. Move to a safe area if you're able, and avoid confronting another driver directly, especially if their behavior seems unpredictable. Wait for law enforcement to arrive and give a clear account of what you saw. Even if injuries seem minor at first, it's worth getting checked by a medical provider, since some injuries from a crash don't show symptoms immediately. Keep any paperwork from police and medical visits in case you need it later.
