Deerfield, IL (April 2, 2026) – A multi-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon led to a semi-truck jackknifing and partially shutting down I-94 near Lake Cook Rd in Deerfield.
The crash was reported around 1:33 p.m. near mile marker 25.25 in the southbound lanes. Emergency units arrived to find several vehicles involved in the middle of traffic, initially believed to include up to five vehicles, before it was later confirmed that three vehicles were involved, including two passenger cars and a semi-truck.
The semi-truck became jackknifed during the incident, blocking multiple lanes and causing heavy delays. The driver of the semi, a woman, was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The other drivers involved declined medical transport.
A secondary crash occurred around 2:19 p.m. near the same area when a vehicle left the roadway, though no injuries were reported in that incident.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
How Do Semi-Trucks Jackknife During Traffic Crashes?
A jackknife happens when a truck’s trailer swings out to the side, forming an angle with the cab. This can occur during sudden braking or when road conditions reduce traction between the tires and pavement.
When multiple vehicles are involved, quick stops or collisions can increase the chance of a trailer losing alignment. Once a truck jackknifes, it can block several lanes due to its size.
These incidents often lead to major delays because clearing a large truck takes time. Careful driving and maintaining distance around large vehicles can help reduce the risk of these crashes.
