DEL MAR, San Diego County, Calif., Nov. 1, 2026 — A multi-vehicle crash on northbound Interstate 5 near Via De La Valle left at least one person injured overnight on Friday into on Saturday, October 31, according to the California Highway Patrol. The collision blocked lanes and backed up traffic for an extended period.
The crash was initially reported as a possible six-vehicle collision, though the California Highway Patrol's official log later classified it as a two-vehicle wreck involving a white Tesla and a dark-colored van, with debris and disabled vehicles scattered across multiple lanes. One occupant of the van reportedly suffered an injury of unknown severity, and the incident was then logged as a minor-injury collision.
All northbound lanes were temporarily stopped while crews worked to clear the scene. Tow trucks were called to the location to remove the vehicles, and responders moved them to the right shoulder as additional units arrived. A caller reported hearing what sounded like a fire in the background during the incident, though no fire was confirmed.
The collision remains under review. We wish those injured a full recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes multi-vehicle crashes hard to investigate?
Investigators usually have to sort out the order in which vehicles collided, which can be difficult when several cars or trucks are involved and accounts from drivers and witnesses differ.
What typically causes pile-ups involving several vehicles?
These crashes usually start with one vehicle slowing, stopping or losing control, then other drivers following too closely or reacting late collide with it in a chain reaction.
How can drivers avoid getting caught in a chain-reaction crash?
Leaving extra following distance, slowing down in heavy traffic or poor visibility, and watching brake lights further ahead can give drivers more time to react before a crash develops.
