DEL MAR, San Diego County, Calif., Nov. 3, 2026 — A multi-vehicle crash blocked lanes on northbound Interstate 5 at Via De La Valle on Monday morning, November 2, according to the California Highway Patrol. Air bags deployed in at least one vehicle, and people were reported standing outside their cars near the scene.
The pileup involved four to five vehicles, including a white Tesla Model Y, a black pickup truck, a gray pickup, a white sedan and a white utility vehicle. The crash blocked the number one lane, the carpool lane and the left lanes of northbound I-5, snarling traffic in the area.
One man was seen standing on the right shoulder near the vehicles. A gray pickup involved in the crash was reportedly left undrivable, though its occupant was said to be uninjured. It was not clear from available information whether anyone else involved was hurt or taken to a hospital.
Fire crews responded and were blocking lanes one through three while they worked the scene. Tow trucks were called to clear multiple vehicles, and a tow rotation request indicated four vehicles would ultimately need to be removed from the freeway. The California Highway Patrol said the roadway was reopened as cleanup finished.
The CHP continues to review the incident. Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and we wish them a full recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why are multi-vehicle crashes harder to investigate than two-car collisions?
Investigators have to work out the order in which each vehicle struck another, which usually means reviewing multiple damage patterns, witness accounts and sometimes onboard vehicle data before determining how the chain reaction started.
What typically causes a chain-reaction pileup like this one?
These crashes usually begin with one vehicle slowing or stopping suddenly, such as after a mechanical problem or a minor collision, with following vehicles unable to stop in time, especially in heavier traffic or reduced visibility.
How can drivers protect themselves in heavy freeway traffic?
Leaving extra following distance and staying alert for brake lights well ahead can give a driver more time to react if traffic suddenly slows or stops.
