DeLand, FL (January 26, 2026) – A deadly single-vehicle crash claimed the life of one person Saturday morning along State Road 44 near Old Sawmill Rd, just east of the Volusia County Fairgrounds. The crash occurred at approximately 9:08 a.m. on January 24, prompting a lengthy response and investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
Initial reports indicate that the driver was traveling westbound on SR-44 at a high rate of speed when the vehicle left the roadway and crashed into a wooded area. Investigators later confirmed the individual was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision, contributing to the fatal outcome.
First responders arrived to find the vehicle severely damaged on the east side of the roadway. Despite immediate efforts, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. No other vehicles were involved.
Westbound lanes of SR-44 were closed for several hours while traffic homicide investigators and the medical examiner’s office conducted a detailed scene assessment. The wreckage remained partially visible from the roadside as officials worked to gather evidence and document the crash.
The Florida Highway Patrol has not yet released the identity of the deceased, and the investigation into the full circumstances of the crash remains ongoing.
Our hearts go out to the victim’s family and loved ones during this time of loss. We hope they find strength and support in the days ahead.
