What Risks Officers Face During Roadside Traffic Stops
Traffic stops place officers in proximity to moving vehicles, often in low-light conditions. Even when emergency lights are activated, passing drivers may not slow down or change lanes as required.
Crashes involving patrol vehicles frequently occur when drivers fail to notice stopped vehicles along the roadside. Reduced visibility at night, distracted driving, and high speeds can increase the danger. When a marked unit is struck, the impact can create a chain reaction involving other vehicles nearby.
Roadside scenes are especially vulnerable because officers may be standing outside their vehicles while speaking with drivers. This exposes them to passing traffic with limited physical protection. Public awareness of move-over laws and attentive driving habits can help reduce these types of collisions on busy South Florida roadways.
