Vero Beach, FL (May 23, 2026) – An Indian River County deputy was taken to a hospital Friday morning, May 22, after a collision at a busy Vero Beach intersection.
The accident was reported at about 7:41 a.m. at Oslo Road and 58th Avenue Southwest. The deputy, identified as D. Hoffman, reported the wreck over the radio, and witnesses also called 911.
Emergency units took Deputy Hoffman to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center under a trauma alert. Officials said he was in stable condition after the crash.
The other driver had non-life-threatening injuries and also received medical attention. The intersection was closed for about an hour before reopening.
The circumstances remain under review, though the initial report said the deputy was not at fault. We hope Deputy Hoffman and the other person hurt continue to recover safely.
Why Intersection Crashes Can Lead to Trauma Alerts
Intersection crashes can be serious because vehicles may enter from different directions at the same time. Side-angle contact can place heavy force on doors, windows, and the people seated closest to the point of contact. Even when a person is stable, a trauma alert may be used so a hospital can prepare for a faster medical review.
Busy intersections may involve turning traffic, traffic signals, stop-and-go movement, and changing visibility. Drivers may have only seconds to react if another vehicle enters their way. Medical teams often check for head, neck, back, chest, and limb injuries after this type of roadway emergency. Vehicle damage, signal timing, lane position, witness reports, and camera footage can help explain how the vehicles came together.
