Frequently Asked Questions
Why does following distance matter so much on highways?
Keeping enough space between vehicles gives drivers time to react if a car ahead brakes suddenly, loses control, or crashes, reducing the chance of a chain-reaction collision.
Do crashes usually trigger a second, separate wreck nearby?
Yes. A disabled or rolled vehicle blocking lanes can catch oncoming traffic off guard, especially at night or in poor visibility, leading to a follow-up crash before the scene is secured.
What makes a crash involving multiple vehicles or occupants harder to investigate?
Investigators have to sort out each vehicle's speed and path, where occupants were seated or ejected, and witness accounts that may conflict, which usually takes longer than a single-car crash review.
