Dinwiddie County, VA (May 1, 2026) – A tractor-trailer driver was injured early Friday morning following a multi-vehicle crash along Interstate 85 in Dinwiddie County. The incident occurred around 1:25 a.m. on the northbound side near mile marker 50, close to the Route 650 exit.
Emergency units responded after a sedan struck a guardrail and came to a stop in the left lane. As traffic approached the disabled car, a tractor-trailer attempted to avoid it by swerving. The truck overturned and jackknifed across the roadway during the maneuver.
A charter bus carrying about 30 passengers also tried to avoid the stopped sedan. The bus sideswiped the driver’s side door of the overturned truck, causing minor damage. No injuries were reported among the passengers on the bus, and the sedan driver was not hurt.
The tractor-trailer driver was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The crash led to a full closure of all northbound lanes for an extended time as crews worked to clear the scene.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
How Multi-Vehicle Crashes Can Develop on High-Speed Highways
Multi-vehicle crashes often begin with a single incident that disrupts traffic flow. When a vehicle stops suddenly in an active lane, approaching drivers have limited time to react. This can lead to swerving, sudden braking, or loss of control, especially at highway speeds.
Large vehicles such as tractor-trailers and buses require more distance to slow down or change direction. When they attempt evasive moves, the risk of overturning or striking nearby vehicles increases. These situations can quickly involve multiple vehicles in a chain reaction.
Clear visibility, safe following distance, and reduced speed can help lower the risk of these crashes. Drivers who remain alert to hazards ahead are better positioned to respond safely and avoid secondary impacts.
