Durham, NC (August 31, 2026) – A 30-year-old man was killed, and two passengers were injured early Saturday when an SUV left Umstead Road and struck a tree and telephone pole in northern Durham. The accident was reported shortly after 3:30 a.m. on August 29, near Riverdale Drive and the Eno River.

According to the Durham Police Department, Cristian Garcia Tepixtle of Durham was driving a 2018 Ford Edge east on Umstead Road toward Riverdale Drive. The SUV left the roadway to the right just before the intersection. Police said the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when it struck a raised driveway. The impact sent the SUV airborne before it struck a tree and then a telephone pole.

Garcia Tepixtle died at the scene. Two passengers in the SUV were also injured, although details about the severity of their injuries were not immediately available. Officials continue examining the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision. Our condolences go out to Cristian Garcia Tepixtle’s family and loved ones, and our thoughts are with the injured passengers.

What Can Cause a Vehicle to Leave the Road?

A vehicle can leave the roadway for several reasons, including excessive speed, sudden steering movements, distracted driving, or changing road conditions. When a vehicle travels beyond the paved surface, hazards such as trees, utility poles, drainage areas, and raised driveways can increase the risk of serious injuries.

Speed can affect how much distance a vehicle travels after leaving the roadway. Higher speeds can also increase the force involved when a vehicle strikes a fixed object. The type of object hit and the angle of impact can further affect the damage to the vehicle and its occupants.

SUV occupants can experience different injuries depending on where they are seated and how the vehicle moves during an accident. Seat belts can help keep occupants inside the passenger compartment and reduce the risk of being thrown during a collision or rollover. Airbags can provide additional protection during certain types of impacts.
