What Are Highway Attenuators Designed to Do?
Highway attenuators are protective devices placed near barriers, lane divisions, and other fixed roadway features. They are designed to absorb some of the energy from a vehicle impact and help reduce the severity of certain crashes.
After a collision with an attenuator, drivers and passengers may remain in or near the vehicle. Exiting a disabled vehicle on a highway can create additional danger because traffic may continue moving through nearby lanes.
Drivers approaching a crash scene should slow down and remain alert for stopped vehicles, debris, and people near the roadway. Emergency responders may also need access to the area while handling a serious highway crash.
