Norwalk, CT (June 22, 2026) – One person was injured in a two-vehicle crash on Friday afternoon on Interstate 95 in Norwalk. The collision was reported at approximately 3:03 p.m. in the southbound lanes of I-95 near Exit 17.
According to state officials, emergency units responded to the scene and transported one driver to a hospital for treatment of reported injuries. Additional information regarding the severity of those injuries was not immediately available.
The crash closed the right lane of the highway while crews worked at the scene. Traffic backed up for miles into neighboring Fairfield before the roadway was fully reopened and the scene was cleared. We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
Why Highway Crashes Can Cause Significant Traffic Delays
Even relatively small crashes on major highways can lead to substantial traffic congestion. When a travel lane is blocked, vehicles must merge into fewer lanes, reducing traffic flow and creating backups that can extend for miles.
Traffic volume plays a major role in how quickly congestion develops. Busy interstate corridors often experience rapid slowdowns when emergency crews, damaged vehicles, or debris occupy part of the roadway.
Responders typically focus on assisting injured people, securing the crash scene, and clearing damaged vehicles as efficiently as possible. Once lanes reopen, it can still take time for traffic conditions to return to normal as the backlog of vehicles gradually moves through the area.
