Fairfax, VA (June 22, 2026) – One person died, and three others were hurt on Monday afternoon, July 21, after a four-vehicle collision on northbound Interstate 495. The accident happened around 3:08 p.m. near Braddock Road in Fairfax County.
State police said the vehicles involved were a Toyota Tacoma, a Scion XB, a Honda Civic, and a Ford F-150. The person who lost their life was inside the Scion XB.
One passenger was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. Two other people were also taken for treatment with non-life-threatening injuries.
All express lanes near the wreck were closed, along with all but one northbound mainline lane, as crews worked along Interstate 495. The first report did not release any names or explain what led to the crash. Investigators are still reviewing the sequence that caused the vehicles to collide.
We extend our sincere condolences to the deceased person’s loved ones and hope the injured people recover.
Why Multi-Vehicle Freeway Crashes Can Cause Long Closures
Multi-vehicle freeway crashes can block several lanes at once. Damaged vehicles may stop in different parts of the road, leaving little room for traffic to pass safely.
Express lanes can add another challenge because access points are limited. When a severe roadway accident happens near those lanes, drivers may have fewer ways to move around the blockage.
Medical care, vehicle removal, and debris cleanup can also take time after a major highway wreck. Early reports may focus on lane closures and injury counts first. Later updates may explain vehicle paths, driver actions, and whether weather or traffic flow contributed.
