What Can Cause a Vehicle to Roll Over During a Traffic Collision?
Rollover crashes can occur when a vehicle experiences a sudden shift in momentum that causes it to tip onto its side or roof. While these crashes are less common than other types of roadway collisions, they can lead to serious injuries because of the forces involved.
Several factors may contribute to a rollover, including vehicle speed, the angle of contact between vehicles, road surface conditions, and the vehicle’s design. Sport utility vehicles, vans, and trucks generally have a higher center of gravity than passenger cars, which can increase the risk of rollover under certain circumstances.
Occupant protection systems such as seat belts and airbags are designed to reduce injury severity during these crashes. Investigators often review vehicle damage, roadway evidence, and vehicle positions to better understand the sequence of events that led to a rollover.
Because rollover crashes can involve multiple points of contact, they frequently produce complex damage patterns that require detailed examination.
