Why Failure to Yield Can Lead to Serious Roadway Crashes
Failure to yield is a common factor in crashes at intersections and during left turns. A driver turning across another lane must watch for approaching traffic and follow signs or signals that control the movement.
Left-turning vehicles can cross directly into the path of traffic moving in the opposite direction. Even at moderate speeds, the resulting contact can cause a vehicle to leave its travel path or overturn. Drivers can reduce risk by slowing before turns, checking for approaching vehicles, and yielding whenever required. Clear visibility also matters, especially near driveways, shopping areas, and other places where vehicles enter or cross busy roads. Careful attention during every turn gives drivers more time to recognize hazards and avoid sudden maneuvers.
