What Often Contributes to Left-Turn Intersection Crashes?
Left-turn crashes at intersections commonly occur when a driver misjudges the speed or distance of oncoming traffic. Even in clear weather, gaps in traffic can appear shorter than they actually are, especially on higher-speed roads like US highways.
Investigators typically examine lane positioning, sight distance, and vehicle timing to understand how a turning maneuver developed into a collision. Intersection layout and traffic volume are also reviewed, along with seat belt use and vehicle damage patterns. These factors can help reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the crash and determine whether driver judgment or visibility played a role.
