Bakersfield, CA (June 30, 2026) – A man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence following a two-vehicle crash in which a driver was killed, early on Sunday morning, June 28, at the intersection of California Avenue and Chester Lane in Bakersfield.
EMS units responded to the scene at approximately 12:06 a.m. A preliminary investigation found that a silver BMW sedan was traveling south on Chester Lane when a silver Mazda hatchback entered the intersection westbound against a red traffic signal, causing the collision. Both vehicles were occupied only by their drivers.
The BMW driver suffered major injuries and was taken to a local hospital, where he later died. The Kern County Coroner’s Office has not released his identity. The Mazda driver, identified as 23-year-old Bakersfield resident Gavin Mundschau, sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital.
Investigators stated that Gavin Mundschau was under the influence of alcohol and arrested him on suspicion of DUI. He is expected to face charges that include vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated after receiving medical clearance. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of the victim.
How Impaired Driving Can Contribute to Intersection Crashes
Alcohol impairment can affect judgment, reaction time, coordination, and the ability to recognize traffic signals. At signal-controlled intersections, these effects may increase the likelihood that a driver enters against a red light or fails to react to other vehicles already in the intersection.
After a suspected impaired driving crash, investigators examine traffic signal timing, vehicle damage, roadway evidence, witness statements, and toxicology results. These findings help establish the sequence of events and determine the factors that contributed to the collision. Medical records and crash reconstruction may also provide additional insight into the severity of the impact and how the crash unfolded.
