Wilkes County, NC (July 3, 2026) – A 21-year-old driver was killed, and another man was seriously injured following a head-on collision on Wednesday morning on North Carolina Highway 16 in Wilkes County.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, troopers responded to the crash at approximately 7:35 a.m. on Wednesday, July 1, near Elisha Staley Road. Investigators said a 2025 Honda Civic traveling north crossed the center line and collided head-on with a southbound 2008 Ford Ranger.

The driver of the Civic, identified as 21-year-old Obaldo Basaldua-Acevedo, was extricated from the wreckage and transported by Wilkes County EMS to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The driver of the Ford Ranger, 60-year-old Martin Harry Halvorsen, was also freed from his vehicle and taken to the same hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Troopers said both drivers were wearing seat belts, and investigators do not believe speed or impairment contributed to the collision. Highway 16 remained closed for approximately 45 minutes while emergency crews responded and investigators processed the scene. Authorities said no charges will be filed.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Obaldo Basaldua-Acevedo and wish Martin Harry Halvorsen a full and speedy recovery.

How Are Cross-Centerline Fatal Crashes Investigated?

Head-on collisions caused by a vehicle crossing the center line require extensive crash investigations due to the severity of the impact. Investigators document skid marks, vehicle damage, debris, roadway conditions, and the final resting positions of the vehicles to determine how the collision occurred.

When occupants must be extricated, emergency responders coordinate rescue efforts before investigators begin a detailed examination of the scene. Vehicle inspections, witness statements, and any available electronic data may also be reviewed to better understand the events leading up to the crash.

By combining physical evidence along with medical findings and witness accounts, investigators work to reconstruct the collision and establish an accurate timeline. This thorough process helps provide a clearer understanding of the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
