What Can Lead to a Vehicle Crossing the Center Line on Rural Highways?
Center-line crossings on rural roads can happen for many reasons, especially on two-lane highways with higher speed limits. Driver fatigue, distraction, medical emergencies, and poor visibility are some of the factors often reviewed after a head-on roadway tragedy. Wet pavement, overcorrection, and limited shoulder space may also contribute to a vehicle moving into oncoming traffic.
Head-on impacts are among the most severe types of roadway contact because both vehicles are often traveling at full speed. Seat belts, airbags, and vehicle size can affect the level of harm experienced by those inside. After these types of crashes, investigators may examine tire marks, roadway design, weather reports, and vehicle data systems to help determine what occurred in the moments before contact happened.
