Collier County, FL (August 27, 2026) – A 62-year-old man was killed after the van he was driving crashed into another van on Interstate 75 in Collier County on Tuesday, August 25.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash happened on northbound I-75 near mile marker 111, about 200 feet north of the Immokalee Road overpass. A Mercedes van was traveling ahead of a Chevrolet Express van in the center lane when traffic stopped.

The Mercedes driver stopped for traffic, but the Chevrolet van driver failed to slow down and crashed into the rear of the Mercedes, FHP said.

The Chevrolet driver suffered serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The 28-year-old driver of the Mercedes was not injured.

The crash remained under investigation.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family, friends, and loved ones of the man who lost his life. We also extend our thoughts to everyone affected by this tragic crash.

What Should Drivers Know About Rear-End Crashes?

Rear-end crashes can happen when traffic slows or stops suddenly, and a following driver does not have enough time or space to react. Maintaining a safe following distance gives motorists more time to brake when conditions ahead change. Drivers should increase that distance when traffic is heavy or visibility is reduced.

Motorists should keep their attention focused on the roadway and watch several vehicles ahead rather than focusing only on the vehicle directly in front of them. This can provide an earlier warning when traffic begins to slow. Avoiding cellphone use and other distractions can also improve reaction time.

Large vehicles such as vans and trucks may require additional stopping distance, particularly when carrying heavy loads. Drivers should account for road and weather conditions when determining a safe speed and following distance. Remaining alert and allowing sufficient space can help reduce the risk of a collision.
