Centre Co., PA (August 27, 2026) – One person was killed on Tuesday afternoon, August 25, in a multi-vehicle chain-reaction crash on eastbound Interstate 80 in Centre County. The crash happened at approximately 3:32 p.m. near the construction zone around mile marker 164.8.
State police said traffic had slowed because of a construction backlog when one eastbound vehicle struck another near the merge point. That vehicle then continued into several others, with multiple impacts occurring in quick succession.
Several vehicles caught fire during the crash sequence. The original vehicle eventually struck a seventh vehicle and came to rest after continuing east. Its driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Emergency reports indicated that multiple people were involved and that two were treated for burn injuries. A medical helicopter was requested to the scene. Eastbound Interstate 80 was shut down for hours while emergency crews worked in the area. The collision remains under review.
