Why Multi-Vehicle Center-Line Cross Crashes Can Escalate Quickly
When a vehicle crosses a center line into oncoming traffic, it can trigger a sequence of impacts involving multiple vehicles in a short period of time. These crashes often occur on roads with steady two-way traffic and limited escape space.
At higher speeds, drivers have less time to react to an unexpected vehicle entering their lane, which increases the likelihood of secondary collisions. Even a single deviation can affect several vehicles depending on traffic density and spacing.
Investigators typically analyze lane positions, roadway markings, vehicle damage patterns, and driver actions to determine how the initial crossover occurred. These findings help reconstruct the chain of events and identify any contributing factors.
