What Hazards Can Storm-Damaged Roads Create for Drivers?
Severe weather can create unexpected roadway hazards, including fallen trees, debris, and reduced visibility. These conditions can be especially dangerous at night when drivers may have less time to react to obstacles in the road.
Investigators usually review weather reports, roadway maintenance response times, and driver visibility when examining crashes involving storm-related hazards. Speed, reaction time, and lighting conditions are also commonly assessed. In rural areas, fallen trees may not be immediately visible to approaching drivers, increasing the risk of sudden impact. These factors help investigators better understand how weather conditions contributed to the crash.
