San Diego, CA (June 13, 2026) – A collision was reported at about 3:16 p.m. in the 13800 block of Mango Drive in the Del Mar Heights neighborhood. A 71-year-old man riding a 2017 Ducati was traveling northbound when the sequence involving two other vehicles unfolded.
A 51-year-old woman driving a 2025 Chevy Trax exited a parking lot on the east side of Mango Drive and began a left turn. The motorcycle rider then entered the path of the turning vehicle, leading to a collision. After the initial contact, the motorcycle continued into a 2017 Lexus driven by a 21-year-old man traveling southbound. The rider was ejected from the Ducati.
Emergency units took the motorcyclist to the hospital with serious injuries, including a compound fracture and an open tibia and fibula fracture to the right leg. His injuries were reported as not life-threatening. No impairment involving alcohol was indicated in the initial information.
Further details about how the sequence developed have not been released. The investigation remains ongoing as more information is reviewed. We are thinking of those affected as recovery continues.
What Typically Contributes to Multi-Vehicle Motorcycle Collisions at Driveway Exits
Collisions between motorcycles and vehicles exiting parking lots often stem from timing errors in judging oncoming traffic speed and distance. Left turns across active lanes are especially sensitive because riders can appear suddenly in a driver’s field of view.
Road layout and visibility near commercial entrances can also influence how quickly a turning maneuver is completed. When multiple vehicles are involved, secondary contacts may occur if a rider or vehicle continues moving after the initial interaction. Medical assessments help determine injury severity, particularly in cases involving ejection from a motorcycle. These situations are frequently reviewed using roadway markings, vehicle positions, and witness accounts to better understand how each movement contributed to the final outcome.
