Why Multi-Vehicle Accidents Tend to Lead to Traffic Delays
Multi-vehicle accidents frequently cause traffic backups because damaged vehicles can block one or more travel lanes. Even when injuries are minor, emergency units may need time to assist those involved, remove vehicles, and clear debris from the roadway. Investigators often examine vehicle positions, traffic flow, weather, and physical evidence to determine how the chain of collisions developed. Heavy traffic and reduced following distances can make it more difficult for drivers to avoid secondary impacts. Once the roadway is cleared and vehicles are removed, normal traffic patterns can gradually return, although congestion may continue for some time afterward.
