What Happens When Impairment Is Suspected After a Fatal Traffic Collision?
When alcohol or drug impairment is suspected after a deadly roadway collision, investigators usually gather several types of evidence to determine what occurred. This may include observations made at the roadway, witness statements, physical evidence from the vehicles involved, and results from chemical testing.
In cases where a driver is arrested for suspected impairment, investigators typically work to establish whether alcohol or drugs affected the person’s ability to operate a vehicle safely. Road conditions, traffic patterns, visibility, and vehicle movements may also be reviewed as part of the process.
Fatal traffic cases frequently require extensive examination because multiple factors can contribute to what happened. Findings from these reviews may take time to complete, especially when investigators are working to build a clear timeline and determine the sequence of actions leading up to the collision.
