Albuquerque, NM (June 8, 2026) – A motorcyclist died on Saturday night, June 6, after a crash on northbound Interstate 25 near Comanche Street NE in Albuquerque, according to New Mexico State Police.
Officers were called to the interstate around 11:53 p.m. When authorities arrived, they found a man lying in the active traffic lanes with a motorcycle nearby. Medical personnel attempted lifesaving measures before the rider, identified as Keegan Thomas, was taken to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where he later died.
Officials said a green BMW with heavy front-end damage was found stopped nearby. Court documents state the driver, identified as 58-year-old Danny Albert Sanchez, told officers he believed he had struck debris in the roadway. Troopers reported observing signs of intoxication, including slurred speech, poor balance, and the smell of alcohol.
Sanchez was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Officials later added a vehicular homicide charge. The investigation into the fatal crash remains ongoing. Our condolences go out to the family of Keegan Thomas.
How Impaired Driving Increases the Risk of Fatal Motorcycle Crashes
Motorcyclists are especially vulnerable during crashes because they lack the protective structure found in passenger vehicles. Even a single impact can lead to life-threatening injuries, particularly on busy highways with fast-moving traffic.
Alcohol and drug impairment may reduce reaction time, coordination, and a driver’s ability to recognize hazards in the roadway. At interstate speeds, even a brief delay in judgment can have devastating consequences for nearby motorists and riders.
Nighttime driving conditions can further increase danger by reducing visibility and making it harder to identify motorcycles on the roadway. Safety experts continue to stress the importance of sober driving and remaining alert while traveling on crowded highways.
