How Alcohol Impairment Can Affect Driving Decisions
Alcohol can significantly reduce a driver’s ability to make safe decisions behind the wheel. Even at levels below the legal limit, impairment may affect judgment, reaction time, coordination, and the ability to accurately assess the speed and distance of approaching vehicles.
Crashes involving impaired drivers often occur when motorists fail to yield, misjudge gaps in traffic, or overlook hazards while entering or crossing a roadway. These situations can be especially dangerous for motorcyclists, who are less visible than larger vehicles and have limited protection during a collision. Traffic safety studies consistently show that alcohol impairment remains a major factor in serious and fatal crashes across the United States. Understanding how impairment affects driving performance helps highlight the risks associated with operating a vehicle after consuming alcohol.
