How Impaired Driving Can Increase the Risk of Fatal Crashes
Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs can significantly reduce a driver’s reaction time, coordination, and judgment. These impairments may affect the ability to maintain lane position, control speed, or recognize hazards ahead.
Crashes involving suspected impairment can happen on highways, neighborhood streets, or near homes and buildings. When a vehicle leaves the roadway, the danger may extend beyond other drivers to pedestrians, residents, and nearby property.
Investigators reviewing suspected impaired-driving crashes often examine witness statements, roadway evidence, and toxicology results. Damage patterns and vehicle movement can also help explain how the vehicle traveled before contact. Public safety experts continue encouraging drivers to avoid getting behind the wheel after consuming substances that may impair judgment or reaction time.
