Why Highway Detail Areas Can Be Dangerous for Emergency Personnel
Highway work zones and roadside traffic details can place emergency personnel close to fast-moving vehicles, especially during nighttime hours. Reduced visibility, narrow lanes, and sudden traffic shifts may increase the chance of drivers drifting toward stopped vehicles.
Many states have move-over laws requiring drivers to slow down and change lanes when approaching police cruisers, tow trucks, or other roadside crews with emergency lights activated. These laws are designed to create a safer space for workers and reduce the risk of secondary crashes.
Distractions, fatigue, and lane-position mistakes can become more dangerous on busy interstates such as Interstate 93. Even minor steering errors may lead to serious contact when vehicles are stopped along the shoulder or travel lanes. Traffic safety experts continue encouraging drivers to remain alert and reduce speed near roadside activity.
