Why Crosswalk Crashes Can Lead to Serious Injuries
Pedestrian crashes in marked crosswalks can still result in severe harm because people on foot have little protection during contact with a moving vehicle. Even at moderate speeds, the force of a roadway collision can lead to broken bones, head trauma, and other major injuries.
Busy intersections may include turning vehicles, changing traffic signals, and limited sightlines that affect driver awareness. Pickup trucks and larger vehicles can also create additional visibility challenges near crosswalks, especially in crowded urban areas.
Investigators reviewing pedestrian crashes often examine traffic signal timing, vehicle speed, roadway markings, and witness statements. Surveillance footage or nearby cameras may also help clarify how the collision occurred. Safety experts encourage both drivers and pedestrians to remain alert at intersections and avoid distractions while crossing or turning through busy streets.
