What Are the Risks of Running a Red Light on an E-Bike in Louisiana?
Electric bikes are subject to the same traffic signals as other vehicles on Louisiana roads, meaning riders must stop at red lights just as drivers do. Running a red light on any vehicle, including an e-bike, puts the rider directly in the path of cross traffic that has the legal right of way. At busy intersections, a rider who enters against a signal may have only a fraction of a second before a vehicle with no ability to stop in time makes contact.
E-bikes can reach speeds that make collisions far more serious than those involving a traditional pedal bicycle. Despite traveling faster, many e-bike riders do not wear helmets or other protective gear, which increases the severity of head and body injuries in a crash. Louisiana law classifies e-bikes by speed and motor output, and riders on public roads are expected to follow all applicable traffic laws regardless of the bike’s classification.
