Kenner, LA (June 4, 2026) – A 65-year-old Kenner man died after the electric bike he was riding was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Loyola Drive and W Esplanade Avenue on the evening of Wednesday, June 3. Emergency units were called to the intersection around 9 p.m.

The man was riding northbound on Loyola Drive when, according to witness statements, the e-bike went through a red light and entered the intersection, and a vehicle traveling on W Esplanade Avenue then struck the bike. The rider was found with severe injuries and was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.

The driver of the vehicle cooperated with those who responded to the wreck, and no criminal charges were expected based on the preliminary review. The man’s name was not released beyond his age and city of residence in the initial report on the accident.

The collision remains under active review, with a portion of the intersection scheduled to be closed for approximately 1 hour on Saturday, June 6, to allow for further documentation. Our condolences go out to the family of the man who lost his life.

What Are the Risks of Running a Red Light on an E-Bike in Louisiana?

Electric bikes are subject to the same traffic signals as other vehicles on Louisiana roads, meaning riders must stop at red lights just as drivers do. Running a red light on any vehicle, including an e-bike, puts the rider directly in the path of cross traffic that has the legal right of way. At busy intersections, a rider who enters against a signal may have only a fraction of a second before a vehicle with no ability to stop in time makes contact.

E-bikes can reach speeds that make collisions far more serious than those involving a traditional pedal bicycle. Despite traveling faster, many e-bike riders do not wear helmets or other protective gear, which increases the severity of head and body injuries in a crash. Louisiana law classifies e-bikes by speed and motor output, and riders on public roads are expected to follow all applicable traffic laws regardless of the bike’s classification.
