Grand Rapids, MI (July 30, 2026) – An 86-year-old man was seriously injured on Thursday, July 30, in a two-vehicle collision on southbound U.S. Highway 131. The accident occurred around 5:45 a.m. near Martin Luther King Jr. Street.

A pickup truck and a disabled semi-tractor-trailer came together south of the entrance ramp. The semi was partially blocking the right lane at the time.

Emergency units took the Lowell man driving the pickup to a hospital. The 35-year-old Montague man operating the semi was not hurt.

The center and right lanes were closed while crews assisted those involved and cleared the roadway. Traffic slowed nearby, and motorists were advised to consider alternate routes. The cause of the collision remains under review.

We hope the hospitalized driver makes steady progress.

How Can Disabled Trucks Create Hazards on Busy Highways?

A disabled truck may stop partly within a travel lane when reaching the shoulder is not possible. Drivers approaching from behind may have limited time to recognize the obstruction, especially before sunrise or during heavy traffic.

Large commercial trucks can also block sight lines for motorists traveling nearby. Their size and weight mean that contact with a smaller vehicle may produce strong forces. Narrow shoulders and entrance ramps can leave even less room for drivers to change lanes safely.

Temporary lane closures provide space for medical assistance, towing, and debris removal. Traffic volume, lighting, road design, and the disabled truck’s position may affect how long delays continue. Warning lights and reflective devices can improve visibility, but approaching motorists may still face sudden braking or merging traffic near the stopped truck.
