Why Pedestrian Freeway Incidents Often Result in Fatal Outcomes
Pedestrian incidents on freeways are among the most dangerous roadway events due to high speeds and limited visibility. Drivers may have very little time to react when a person is on active lanes, especially during nighttime hours when lighting is reduced.
Freeway environments are not designed for pedestrian travel, which increases the risk of severe outcomes when someone enters traffic lanes. Investigators typically examine roadway access points, lighting conditions, vehicle movement, and traffic flow patterns to determine how these incidents occur. Even brief exposure in live traffic lanes can lead to catastrophic consequences due to stopping distances required at highway speeds.
