Why Rollover Crashes Can Lead to Vehicle Fires
Rollover crashes can cause major damage to a vehicle’s fuel system, engine components, or electrical wiring, increasing the chance of a fire after the vehicle comes to rest. When a vehicle leaves the roadway and overturns, sparks or leaking fluids may also ignite nearby grass or brush, especially in dry conditions.
Investigators often review roadway conditions, speed, and tire movement when examining rollover roadway collisions. The direction of travel and the angle at which a vehicle leaves the pavement can also help explain how the rollover occurred.
Brush fires connected to roadway crashes may spread quickly depending on weather and ground conditions. Fire crews typically work to contain both the vehicle fire and the surrounding vegetation before the area can be safely reopened.
