Effingham Co., GA (March 26, 2026) – A multi-vehicle crash involving semi-trucks and passenger cars caused delays on Thursday, March 26, along Interstate 16 in Effingham County. The crash was reported around 10:30 a.m. near Old River Road, also known as Exit 148.
Emergency units responded to the westbound lanes after a vehicle struck the rear of a semi-truck, triggering a chain reaction involving another car and a second semi. The impact led to a full closure of the westbound lanes, with traffic temporarily rerouted to nearby routes.
One person was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Crews worked to clear the scene, and the roadway gradually reopened, with all lanes back open just before noon.
The crash remains under investigation. We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
How Chain-Reaction Crashes Develop on Busy Interstates
Busy approaches near Interstate 16 can slow rapidly following crashes. Crews in Effingham County may redirect traffic as needed to keep conditions safe.
Chain-reaction crashes often begin with a rear-end impact, which can quickly involve additional vehicles traveling close behind. On highways, higher speeds and limited stopping distances can make it harder to avoid secondary collisions.
Large vehicles, such as semi-trucks, can increase the complexity of these incidents. Their size and weight may lead to extended closures as crews work to clear lanes and restore normal traffic flow.
